prāṇān ādatta yodhānāṁ pitā devavratas tava

Translation

サञ्जयは語った。そなたの父デーヴァヴラタ（ビーシュマ）は、戦士たちの命を奪い、戦場で次々と斬り伏せた。この一句は戦の倫理的重荷の苛烈さを示す。敬われる老将でさえ、己が陣営への義務に縛られ、広く死をもたらす器となるのだ。
