Adhyāya 42 — Mahābhūta–Indriya–Adhyātma-Vyavasthā
Brahmā’s Instruction on Elements and Faculties
त्रीणि स्थानानि भूतानां चतुर्थ नोपपद्यते
trīṇi sthānāni bhūtānāṃ caturtha nopapadyate
ヴァーユは語った。「生きとし生けるものには、あり得る状態、あるいは赴く先は三つである。第四は正しくは成り立たぬ。」
वायुदेव उवाच
The verse asserts a fixed, limited framework for the possible ‘states/destinations’ of beings—three are recognized, and any proposed fourth is rejected as untenable. Ethically, it implies that moral and karmic life operates within an ordered structure rather than arbitrary outcomes.
Vāyudeva is speaking and lays down a doctrinal point in concise form: beings are understood to fall into three categories of condition or destination, and he denies the validity of a fourth alternative, setting boundaries for the discussion that follows.
