Nārada–Devamata Dialogue on Prāṇa, Apāna, and Udāna

nārada uvāca | yenāyaṃ sṛjyate jantus tato 'nyaḥ pūrvam eti tam | prāṇadvandvaṃ hi vijñeyaṃ tiryag ūrdhvaṃ adhaś ca yat ||

Educational Q&A

Creation is not explained only by a single immediate cause; Nārada points to a prior, pervasive condition—prāṇadvandva, the dual functioning of vital forces—present throughout all levels of existence (higher, middle, and lower realms).

Nārada is instructing a sage (muni) in a doctrinal discussion on origins: he identifies an underlying principle that precedes and supports the arising of embodied beings, framing it in terms of prāṇa operating in a dual mode across the cosmos.
