Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s Counsel on Royal Policy to Yudhiṣṭhira

dharmātmānam atas tubhyam anujānīmahe sutam | āpa isa sampūrṇa jagat ke svāmī haiṃ; isaliye hama āpako apanā guru mānate haiṃ aura āpa dharmātmā nareśa ko vana meṃ jāne kī anumati dete haiṃ tathā āpake putra duryodhana ke liye hamārā yaha kathana hai—

Educational Q&A

Legitimate authority should be acknowledged with humility, and major life-transitions—especially renunciation and withdrawal from power—are framed as dharmic acts requiring consent and ethical deliberation, not mere personal impulse.

Vaiśampāyana reports a formal address to an authority figure regarded as ‘lord of the world’ and ‘guru’: permission is sought/granted for a righteous king to depart to the forest, and the speaker signals that a consequential statement is about to be made concerning Duryodhana.
