Lament in Hastināpura after the Elders’ Forest Withdrawal
yathā syād bhavitā cāhaṃ kuntī ceyaṃ vadhūs tava |
Sorrow is addressed not by force but by grace and compassionate guidance: the speaker seeks a state of śoka-rahitatā (freedom from grief) for all concerned, implying that inner peace is a dharmic aim supported by reverence toward the spiritually venerable.
In the Ashramavāsika setting, Vaiśampāyana reports a plea that the king, the speaker, and Kuntī (described as the addressee’s daughter-in-law) may all become free from grief, requesting the ‘Blessed One’ to grant such relief through favor and compassion.
