Praise of the Merit of Donating Umbrella and Footwear
tasthau tasyā hi santaptaṃ śiraḥ pādau tathaiva ca |
The verse highlights the bodily cost of hardship and austerity: even a dignified person must pause and seek relief when overwhelmed. It implicitly supports a dharmic balance—endurance is valued, yet compassion and practical care for the body are also appropriate.
Reṇukā, distressed by heat, keeps stopping because her head and feet are burning. She moves from one tree’s shade to another, pausing intermittently for relief, as Bhīṣma narrates the episode.
