Chatra–Upānah Dāna: Origin Narrative
Jamadagni–Reṇukā–Sūrya Saṃvāda
विश्वामित्र उवाच करोतु भृतको<वर्षा राज्ञश्नास्तु पुरोहित: । ऋषच्विगस्तु हायाज्यस्य यस्ते हरति पुष्करम्,विश्वामित्र बोले--जो आपका कमल चुरा ले गया हो, वह वैश्यका भृत्य होकर उसीके खेतमें वर्षा होनेमें बाधा उपस्थित करे। राजाका पुरोहित हो और यज्ञके अनधिकारीका यज्ञ करानेके लिये ऋत्विक् बने, अर्थात् इन पापोंके फलका भागी हो
viśvāmitra uvāca—karotu bhṛtako ’varṣā rājñaḥ syān nāstu purohitaḥ | ṛtvig astu hy ayājyasya yaste harati puṣkaram ||
ヴィシュヴァーミトラは言った。「汝の蓮華を盗んだ者は、雇われの僕となりながら主人の田に雨を妨げ、旱魃を招くがよい。王のプurohita(王室祭司)となり、さらに供犠にふさわしからぬ者のために祭式を執り行うṛtvij(祭官)ともなって、その罪の果報を分かち受けよ。」
विश्वामित्र उवाच
The verse warns that wrongdoing (theft) and religious misconduct (serving as priest for an unqualified sacrificer) generate grave karmic consequences. It also highlights that ritual roles like purohita and ṛtvij carry ethical responsibility; misusing them makes one a participant in sin.
Viśvāmitra pronounces a punitive imprecation against the person who stole a lotus: despite becoming a servant, he will cause drought; despite attaining respected priestly positions, he will be tainted by officiating improper sacrifices, thereby sharing in their demerit.
