Nahuṣa–Cyavana Episode
कुले स्रोतसि संच्छन्ने यस्य स्थाद् योनिसंकर: । संश्रयत्येव तच्छीलं नरोडल्पमथवा बहु
kule srotasi saṁchannē yasya sthād yonisaṅkaraḥ | saṁśrayatyeva tacchīlaṁ naro 'lpam athavā bahu ||
ビーシュマは言った。「たとえ家の血脈の流れが覆い隠され、外からは誰がどの家系に属し、誰の種から生まれたのかが明らかでなくとも、混淆し錯綜した結合(サンカラ・ヨーニ)から生まれた者は、少なかれ多かれ必ず父の気質を受け継ぐ。隠れた出自は遺伝する傾向を消し去らぬゆえ、行いと婚姻の規範、そして家系と品性の護持にこそ慎みが要る。」
भीष्म उवाच
That concealed lineage does not prevent inherited dispositions from manifesting; therefore dharmic society emphasizes responsible unions and cultivation of character, since tendencies linked to parentage can appear even when origins are not publicly known.
In Bhishma’s instruction on dharma (Anushasana Parva), he explains to the listener that mixed or uncertain birth (yoni-saṅkara) still shows traces of paternal nature, using this to underscore the importance of safeguarding lineage and ethical conduct.
