न चास्ति शक्तिस्त्रैलोक्ये कस्यचित् पुरुषोत्तम । पतिव्रतामिमां साध्वीं तवोद्वीक्षितुमप्युत
Transliteration
na cāsti śaktis trailokye kasyacit puruṣottama | pativratām imāṃ sādhvīṃ tavodvīkṣitum apy uta ||
Translation
ビーシュマは言った。「『プルショーत्तマよ、三界のいずこにも、汝の妻—貞節にして善良、夫に一途に仕えるサティ—に対し、穢れた思いで目を上げて見ることすらできる者はいない。彼女の貞信と汝の義が生む守護は、侵すことができぬのだ』」

The verse upholds the ethical ideal that a woman’s steadfast fidelity (pativratā-dharma) and virtue create a moral inviolability: lustful or impure intent is portrayed as powerless before chastity supported by dharma.
