Chapter 2: Sudarśana Upākhyāna — Atithi-Dharma and the Conquest of Mṛtyu
Gṛhastha-Vrata
atha aughavān nāma nṛpo nṛga-sthāsīt pitāmahaḥ | tasyāthaughavatī kanyā putraś caugharatho 'bhavat || (pūrvam: kālāt tasya garbhād agneḥ putraḥ samajāyata, sudarśana iti nāmnā; sa rūpeṇa pūrṇa-candra-samaḥ manoharaḥ, bālye 'pi sarva-svarūpa-sanatana-parabrahma-jñāna-yuktaḥ) ||
The passage juxtaposes royal genealogy with spiritual attainment: even amid dynastic narratives, the highest value is jñāna—realization of the eternal Parabrahman—shown here as possible even in childhood, implying that true excellence is inner awakening rather than mere birth or power.
Bhīṣma continues a lineage-and-episode account: a son of Agni named Sudarśana is born and is described as exceptionally beautiful and spiritually realized; then the narration shifts to the earthly royal line, introducing King Oghavān (grandfather of Nṛga) and naming his children Oghavatī and Ogharatha.
