Single-point refuge in Vāsudeva and making him one’s highest end purifies the person from all pāpa (moral and spiritual demerit) and leads to the attainment of sanātana brahma (the eternal Absolute). Devotion is presented as an ethical-spiritual discipline that transforms the inner self.
In the Anuśāsana Parva’s instruction setting, Bhīṣma is teaching Yudhiṣṭhira about dharma and the highest means to spiritual welfare. Here he emphasizes that wholehearted reliance on Vāsudeva results in inner purification and final liberation.
