Discerning Dharma in Accord with Time
śaṭha-pralāpād viratā viruddha-parivarjakāḥ | saumyapralāpino nityaṁ te narāḥ svarga-gāminaḥ ||
The verse teaches that moral discipline in speech and attitude—avoiding deceitful or harsh talk, giving up hostility, shunning contentious opposition, and consistently speaking gently—constitutes dharmic conduct that leads to auspicious results, here expressed as attainment of Svarga.
In Anuśāsana Parva’s instruction-focused setting, Śrīmahēśvara (Śiva) is presented as the speaker, laying down a behavioral rule: those who renounce malicious speech and antagonism and cultivate gentle, steady conduct are described as fit for heavenly attainment.
