Pratyakṣa–Āgama–Ācāra: Doubt, Proof, and the Practice of Dharma (प्रत्यक्ष–आगम–आचारविचारः)
उमोवाच (एषां यायावराणां तु धर्ममिच्छामि मानद । कृपया परया<<विष्टस्तन्मे ब्रूहि महेश्वर ।।
śrīmaheśvara uvāca |
dharmaṃ yāyāvarāṇāṃ tvaṃ śṛṇu bhāmini tatparā ||
vratopavāsaśuddhāṅgās tīrthasnānaparāyaṇāḥ ||
dhṛtimantaḥ kṣamāyuktāḥ satyavrataparāyaṇāḥ ||
pakṣamāsopavāsaiś ca karśitā dharmadarśinaḥ ||
varṣāśītātapair eva kurvantaḥ paramaṃ tapaḥ ||
kālayogena gacchanti śakralokaṃ śucismite ||
ウマーは言った。「万人に尊崇を授けるマヘーシュヴァラよ、私は遊行の苦行者ヤーヤーヴァラ(yāyāvara)のダルマを聞きたい。大いなる慈悲をもって、私にお告げください。」マハーデーヴァは答えた。「麗しき者よ、心してヤーヤーヴァラのダルマを聞け。彼らは誓戒と断食によって身を清め、ティールタ(tīrtha、聖なる渡し場)での沐浴に励む。堅忍と忍耐を備え、真実の誓いに専心し、半月・一月の長斎によって身はやせ衰えるが、眼差しは常にダルマに据えられている。雨・寒・熱を耐え、厳しい苦行を行い、時が至れば(時の法により)釈迦天(Śakra)の天界へと旅立つ。」
श्रीमहेश्वर उवाच
The dharma of wandering ascetics is defined by disciplined vows and fasting, devotion to sacred bathing, truthfulness, patience, and endurance of hardship; such sustained self-restraint is presented as a path to purified conduct and a meritorious afterlife.
Umā asks Maheśvara to explain the practices of different forest-ascetic groups; in this verse he begins describing the yāyāvaras, listing their austerities and virtues and stating that, when their destined time arrives, they attain Śakra’s heaven.
