Śatarudrīya-prabhāva and Rudra’s Supremacy (शतरुद्रीयप्रभावः)

Educational Q&A

The passage frames Śiva as the steady cosmic ground and protector: the universe mirrors the state that ‘touches’ the divine—auspiciousness or its opposite. It also articulates a complementary theology: Viṣṇu as creator and Śiva as guardian, emphasizing cosmic interdependence and responsibility.

In response to Devī’s doubt, Śiva affirms that her question is appropriate and uniquely intimate. He then explains that when she playfully closed his eyes, the world instantly lost its light—setting up the mythic rationale for subsequent events (such as the manifestation of another source of light/vision).
