भारत! धर्म, अर्थ, भय, कामना और दया--इन पाँच हेतुओंसे दानको पाँच प्रकारका जानना चाहिये। अब जिन कारणोंसे दान देना उचित है, उनको सुनो ।।
bhārata! dharma-artha-bhaya-kāmanā-dayā—ebhiḥ pañcabhir hetubhiḥ dānaṃ pañcadhā jñātavyam. adhunā yeṣu kāraṇeṣu dānaṃ pradātum ucitaṃ, tān śṛṇu. iha kīrtim avāpnoti pretya cānuttamaṃ sukham; iti dānaṃ pradātavyaṃ brāhmaṇebhyo ’n-asūyatā.
ビーシュマは言った。「バーラタよ、ダルマ、利得（財）、恐れ、欲望、そして慈悲という五つの因によって、布施は五種と知るべきである。いま、布施が真にふさわしい理由を聞け。施す者はこの世で名声を得、死後には無上の安楽を得る。ゆえに、ねたみや怨みを離れて、バラモンたちに施すべきである。」
