FAQs

This verse states that once a woman is properly married (brāhma and other sanctioned forms), her piṇḍa and water offerings are performed in her husband’s gotra, indicating ritual affiliation to the husband’s lineage for post-death rites.

By assigning her piṇḍodaka-kriyā to the husband’s gotra, the verse implies that her post-death offerings are ritually handled according to the husband’s lineage framework rather than her birth family’s gotra.

When arranging śrāddha/antyeṣṭi-related offerings for a married woman, follow the tradition that uses the husband’s gotra in the sankalpa and ritual identifiers, aligning observance with dharma as described here.
