小便と大便という自然の衝動を力ずくで抑え—さらにそれを無理に排出させるなら—忌むべき病を招く。すなわち下痢、そして腸の病(グラハニー grahaṇī);これもまた一つの苦患である。
Lord Vishnu (teaching Garuda/Vinata-putra)
Dosha: Vata
Concept: Vegadhāraṇa (suppression of natural urges) is adharma against the body’s order and leads to suffering.
Vedantic Theme: Deha as upādhi: neglect of the instrument (body-mind) obstructs sādhana; suffering follows from avidyā-driven compulsion.
Application: Do not forcibly suppress urine/stool urges; maintain regular elimination, hydration, and routine; avoid ‘holding’ due to shame, work pressure, or travel.
Primary Rasa: bibhatsa
Secondary Rasa: bhayanaka
Related Themes: Garuda Purana 1.156 (Ayurvedic/health instruction section on vāyu disorders and anorectal disease)
This verse states that holding back urine and feces and then forcing their release leads to painful, “loathsome” disorders like diarrhoea and grahaṇī, showing that dharmic living includes respecting the body’s natural functions.
It links a specific habit (vega-dhāraṇa—urge suppression) to concrete suffering (upadrava—affliction), illustrating the Purana’s broader principle that improper conduct, even in bodily matters, produces harmful results.
Do not habitually delay urination or bowel movements; maintain regular routines and mindful self-care, treating bodily rhythms as part of disciplined, ethical living.
