nago gayaśiro yatra puṇyā caiva mahānadī
Vaiśaṃpāyana said: “There lies the mountain called Gayaśiras, and there too flows a great and sacred river.”
वैशग्पायन उवाच
The verse highlights sacred geography: certain places—mountains and rivers—are regarded as intrinsically purifying and merit-giving, encouraging reverence, restraint, and pilgrimage-oriented dharma.
Vaiśaṃpāyana is describing a holy region by naming its notable features: the mountain Gayaśiras and a great sacred river, as part of a broader account of tīrthas and revered locales.
