Dhaumya said: “In this connection, the great yogin, the illustrious Markandeya, once recited a lineage-worthy praise-song concerning King Nṛga, lord of the earth. It is remembered that at Nṛga’s sacrifice at the excellent Varāha-tīrtha on the bank of the Payoshṇī, Indra became exhilarated after drinking Soma, and the Brahmins too were filled with joy, having received abundant gifts. Such is the sanctifying power of that place and its waters: even a mere touch—whether the water is lifted in the hand, fallen upon the ground, or splashed by the wind—washes away the sins accumulated from birth until death.”

Educational Q&A

The passage highlights the ethical-religious ideal that yajña (sacrifice) supported by generous dakṣiṇā (gifts) and reverence for tīrthas fosters communal well-being and spiritual purification; sacred waters are portrayed as instruments of moral cleansing, encouraging pilgrimage, restraint, and renewed commitment to dharma.

Dhaumya introduces a remembered account: the sage Markandeya recited a praise-song about King Nṛga. The scene recalls Nṛga’s sacrifice at Varāha-tīrtha on the Payoshṇī, where Indra drinks Soma and the Brahmins rejoice after receiving abundant gifts, underscoring the sanctity of the place and the purifying power attributed to its waters.
