Tīrtha-yātrā: Phalaśruti and Sacred Geography from Lohitya to Prayāga

Pulastya’s Instruction

tatas tv auśanasaṃ gacchet triṣu lokeṣu viśrutam | yatra brahmādayo devā ṛṣayaś ca tapodhanāḥ ||

Then one should proceed to the sacred ford known as Auśanasa, renowned throughout the three worlds—where Brahmā and the other gods, along with ascetic seers rich in austerity, are said to dwell. The verse frames pilgrimage as a disciplined turning toward holy company and places of spiritual power, implying that proximity to the divine and the self-controlled strengthens one’s own conduct and resolve.

Educational Q&A

The verse recommends pilgrimage to a renowned tīrtha and highlights the ethical-spiritual value of seeking places and company marked by tapas and divine presence—suggesting that disciplined travel and reverence can refine one’s character and strengthen dharmic living.

The speaker gives sequential guidance about visiting sacred sites: after the previous step, the listener is instructed to go next to the famous Auśanasa-tīrtha, described as a place associated with Brahmā, other gods, and austere sages.
