ध्यात्वा चिरं भीमसुता दमयन्ती शुचिस्मिता । भर्तुशोकपरा दीना विवर्णवदनाभवत्,पवित्र मुसकानवाली भीमपुत्री दमयन्ती बहुत देरतक इन सब बातोंपर विचार करती रही। तत्पश्चात् वह पतिशोकपरायण और दीन हो गयी तथा उसके मुखपर उदासी छा गयी
dhyātvā ciraṃ bhīmasutā damayantī śucismitā | bhartuḥ-śokaparā dīnā vivarṇavadanābhavat ||
After reflecting for a long time, Damayantī—the daughter of Bhīma, known for her pure, gentle smile—became overwhelmed by grief for her husband. Sinking into dejection, her face lost its color and grew shadowed with sorrow. The verse underscores steadfast marital devotion and the ethical weight of separation, showing how inner contemplation can deepen both resolve and suffering.
बृहृदश्च उवाच
The verse highlights pativratā-bhāva (steadfast devotion to one’s spouse) and the moral seriousness of separation: deep reflection can intensify awareness of duty and love, even when it brings sorrow.
Bṛhadaśva describes Damayantī thinking for a long time about her situation; as thoughts of her husband dominate her, she becomes despondent and her face turns pale with grief.
