athābravīt kaliṃ śakraḥ samprekṣya balavṛtrahā | dvāpareṇa sahāyena kale brūhi kva yāsyasi ||

Then Śakra (Indra), the mighty slayer of Vṛtra, looked upon Kali and spoke: “O Kali, accompanied by Dvāpara—tell me, where are you going?” The question frames Kali and Dvāpara as ominous forces moving together, inviting scrutiny from the guardian of cosmic order.

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights vigilance toward forces that erode dharma: even when decline (Kali) advances with an ally (Dvāpara), divine authority interrogates and seeks accountability, implying that disorder should be recognized and checked rather than ignored.

Bṛhadaśva narrates that Indra, famed for killing Vṛtra, sees Kali moving along with Dvāpara and directly questions him about his destination, setting up a confrontation with the personified yugas.
