Vaiśampāyana said: “O best of the Bharatas, the Pāṇḍavas—intending to undertake their forest exile—set out from the bank of the Jāhnavī (Gaṅgā) and proceeded to Kurukṣetra, accompanied by their followers.”
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse frames exile as a deliberate, duty-bound course of action: the Pāṇḍavas accept hardship with purpose and proceed in an orderly way with their companions, modeling restraint and commitment to dharma even under injustice.
At the start of this chapter, Vaiśampāyana narrates that the Pāṇḍavas, preparing for their forest residence, depart from the Gaṅgā’s bank and head toward Kurukṣetra with their followers, marking the opening movement of their exile journey.
