Dhṛtarāṣṭra and Sañjaya on Arjuna’s Indraloka report and the political consequences
na mām amahasi kalyāṇi anyathā dhyātum apsaraḥ | guror gurutarā me tvaṃ mama tvaṃ vaṃśavardhinī ||
Vaiśampāyana said: “O auspicious one, O Apsaras, do not think of me in any improper way. To me you are weightier in reverence even than a teacher, for you are the increaser of my lineage.”
The verse emphasizes ethical restraint and proper regard: one should not entertain or attribute improper intentions, especially toward a revered figure connected with one’s lineage. It elevates gratitude and reverence for the progenitress of a dynasty, presenting lineage-duty and respect as a form of dharma.
The speaker addresses an Apsaras (understood as Urvaśī in the surrounding context) and asks her not to misconstrue his feelings or intentions. He clarifies that he views her with veneration because she is regarded as the one who furthers his family line, and thus, in his eyes, she deserves honor even greater than that accorded to a teacher.
