Chapter 40: Śiva in Kirāta Disguise Tests Arjuna
Mūka-vadha and the Contest
प्रीतिमानस्मि ते पार्थ भवान् सत्यपराक्रम: । गृहाण वरमस्मत्त: काड्क्षितं पुरुषोत्तम,पार्थ! तुम्हारा पराक्रम यथार्थ है, इसलिये मैं तुमपर बहुत प्रसन्न हूँ। पुरुषोत्तम! तुम मुझसे मनोवांछित वर ग्रहण करो
prītimān asmi te pārtha bhavān satya-parākramaḥ | gṛhāṇa varam asmat kāṅkṣitaṁ puruṣottama pārtha ||
The Lord of gods said: “O Pārtha, I am pleased with you, for your valor is true and proven. Therefore, accept from me the boon you desire, O Puruṣottama, O Pārtha.”
देवदेव उवाच
True, demonstrated valor aligned with dharma attracts divine favor; when merit is genuine (satya-parākrama), grace may manifest as an offered boon, emphasizing ethical causality between conduct and reward.
A divine figure (Devadeva) addresses Arjuna (Pārtha), expresses satisfaction with his proven prowess, and invites him to choose and accept a desired boon, marking a moment of divine acknowledgment and empowerment.
