Vyāsa’s Counsel to Yudhiṣṭhira: Pratismṛti-vidyā, Arjuna’s Aśtra-Quest, and the Move to Kāmyaka

Vaiśampāyana said: Arjuna declares to Indra, lord of the Thirty-three, that he does not seek boons out of greed or desire—neither divinity, nor heavenly pleasure, nor even sovereignty over all the gods. Having left his brothers in the forest, he refuses to accept celestial rewards before avenging the enmity of their foes; to do otherwise, he says, would bring him lasting disgrace in all worlds. The passage frames Arjuna’s ethic of honor and duty: rightful action and loyalty to his brothers outweigh personal gain, even the highest heavenly attainments.
