Vaiśampāyana said: “O auspicious lady, O sinless one—if you succeed in serving him in this manner, you will surely attain well-being. But if, through improper conduct, you anger that foremost of Brahmins, my entire lineage will be consumed and reduced to ashes.”

Educational Q&A

Proper conduct and respectful service toward a venerable Brahmin is presented as dharmic and welfare-producing; provoking such a figure through impropriety is portrayed as bringing catastrophic consequences not only to oneself but to one’s entire lineage.

The narrator (Vaiśampāyana) conveys a warning and encouragement to a woman addressed as ‘kalyāṇi’ and ‘anaghā’: success in serving the Brahmin leads to certain good, while angering him would result in the destruction of the speaker’s whole family line.
