गत्वोत्तरायणं तेजो रसानुद्धृत्य रश्मिभि: । दक्षिणायनमावृत्तो महीं निविशते रवि:,धौम्य बोले--राजन्! सृष्टिके प्रारम्भकालमें जब सभी प्राणी भूखसे अत्यन्त व्याकुल हो रहे थे, तब भगवान् सूर्यने पिताकी भाँति उन सबपर दया करके उत्तरायणमें जाकर अपनी किरणोंसे पृथ्वीका रस (जल) खींचा और दक्षिणायनमें लौटकर पृथ्वीको उस रससे आविष्ट किया 4 स्ि नि पर झ जय प् क्र पाण्डवोंका वनगमन उर्वशीका अर्जुनको शाप देना नलका अपने पूर्वरूपमें प्रकट होकर दमयन्तीसे मिलना भीताप्रेसे गो जमदग्निका परशुरामसे कार्तवीर्य-अर्जुनका अपराध बताना महाप्रलयके समय भगवान् मत्स्यके सींगमें बँधी हुई मनु और सप्तर्षियोंसहित नौका मार्कण्डेय मुनिको अक्षयवटकी शाखापर बालमुकुन्दका दर्शन #% कि
gatvottarāyaṇaṁ tejo rasān uddhṛtya raśmibhiḥ | dakṣiṇāyanam āvṛtto mahīṁ niviśate raviḥ ||
Dhaumya said: “O King, at the beginning of creation, when all creatures were tormented by hunger, the Sun—out of compassion like a father—went to the northern course (uttarāyaṇa) and, with his rays, drew up the earth’s essence (its moisture). Then, returning in the southern course (dakṣiṇāyana), he settles upon the earth, suffusing it again with that essence.”
