Mārkaṇḍeya said: Then Satyavān, strong and resolute, with his wife as his companion, gathered fruits and filled a sturdy basket. After that, he set about splitting firewood. The scene quietly foregrounds household duty and mutual companionship—ordinary acts through which steadfastness and dharma are lived, just before the larger moral trial of the Savitrī–Yama episode unfolds.

Dharma is shown first through ordinary responsibilities—work, provision, and shared effort. The verse highlights the ethical ideal of partnership (bhāryāsahāyaḥ): virtue is sustained not only by vows and debates, but also by steady, cooperative household action.
Mārkaṇḍeya narrates that Satyavān, accompanied by his wife Sāvitrī, gathers fruits, fills a sturdy basket, and then begins splitting firewood—setting the scene immediately before the decisive events of the Savitrī–Yama episode.
