Mārkaṇḍeya said: In that forest, provisions of food and water were abundant, and roots and fruits were plentiful. Therefore Kakutstha (Rāma) established the army’s camp there and, in due and disciplined manner, maintained its protection and security.
मार्कण्डेय उवाच
Effective leadership aligns with dharma: a ruler or commander secures the welfare of dependents by choosing a sustainable location, organizing the camp properly, and maintaining vigilant protection—discipline and foresight are ethical duties, not merely tactics.
In Mārkaṇḍeya’s narration of the Rāmopākhyāna to Yudhiṣṭhira, Rāma finds a forest with ample food, water, roots, and fruits, establishes the army’s encampment there, and ensures its orderly defense.
