Vaiśampāyana said: “O King, today this entire earth—girdled by the ocean—together with its mountains, forests, and pleasure-groves, even with all that is immovable and inanimate, lies under your authority. The rulers dwelling in the eastern, southern, western, and northern regions have all been made tributary to you, O lord of men.” Ethically, the verse frames sovereignty not as mere possession but as a condition that brings responsibility: the king’s dominion extends over land and life alike, implying the duty to protect, govern justly, and restrain pride that can arise from universal tribute.
