Mārkaṇḍeya said: Struck by hunger, he suddenly fell to the ground unconscious. Then, with Skanda’s sanction, he became a fearsome, wrathful graha—an afflicting spirit-force—set loose to seize and torment.

Power to harm is portrayed as operating under higher sanction: even a terrifying afflicting force (graha) becomes active only when authorized by a divine authority (Skanda), implying that destructive energies are not random but governed within a moral-cosmic order.
A being, overwhelmed by hunger, collapses unconscious; afterward, by Skanda’s permission, it transforms into a fierce graha—an entity characterized by ‘seizing’ or afflicting—indicating its new role as a dreadful, active agent of torment.
