Mārkaṇḍeya said: The blessed Lord, whose banner bears the bull, being exceedingly pleased, honored Skanda with reverent worship. The Brahmins declare Agni to be a form of Rudra; therefore Skanda is indeed the son of Rudra. The passage underscores a devotional ethic: true reverence recognizes the unity of divine manifestations and honors worthy beings without jealousy or sectarian division.
The verse teaches a devotional and ethical principle: honor is due where divinity and merit are recognized, and divine powers may appear in multiple interconnected forms (Agni as Rudra), so reverence should be inclusive rather than sectarian.
Mārkaṇḍeya narrates that Śiva (the bull-bannered Lord) joyfully honors Skanda. He then supports Skanda’s identity as Rudra’s son by citing the Brahminical doctrine that Agni is a manifestation of Rudra.
