Markandeya said: “Here in this world and after death as well, for such a person there arise enduring fame and lasting righteousness. O best of kings, the son who truly understands dharma is the one who fulfills the hopes of both his parents. He whose mother and father remain continually satisfied with him attains imperishable renown and an abiding share in dharma, both in this life and in the next.”

A son’s dharma is measured by how he fulfills the hopes of his parents; keeping mother and father genuinely satisfied leads to imperishable fame and lasting dharma in both this life and the next.
Mārkaṇḍeya addresses a king (rājendra) with moral instruction, emphasizing filial responsibility as a key ethical standard and linking it to rewards across both worldly and posthumous realms.
