(Primacy of Filial Service) — Mārkaṇḍeya’s Account of the Vyādha’s Instruction

sa tu devān sagandharvān jitvā dhundhur amarṣaṇaḥ | babādha sarvān asakṛd viṣṇuṃ devāṃś ca vai bhṛśam ||

Markandeya said: Filled with fierce wrath, Dhundhu first conquered the gods together with the Gandharvas; then, again and again, he violently oppressed them all—assailing even Vishnu and the other deities. The episode underscores how unchecked anger and pride, when joined to power, turn into tyranny that threatens cosmic order and calls for righteous restraint and protection of dharma.

Educational Q&A

Power driven by amarṣa (resentful intolerance) becomes destructive: it leads to repeated oppression even of the worthy, threatening dharma and the stability of the world; therefore self-restraint and righteous governance are essential.

Mārkaṇḍeya describes Dhundhu as wrathful and aggressive: he defeats the Devas along with the Gandharvas and then repeatedly harasses them all, even confronting Viṣṇu and the other gods with severe violence.
