Mārkaṇḍeya said: “May I give wealth in charity to the foremost of the twice-born; may I remain unconquerable to my enemies; may I have friendship and loving intimacy with Lord Viṣṇu; and may there be in me only non-malice toward all living beings.”
मार्कण्डेय उवाच
The verse presents an ethical ideal that balances four virtues: generosity to worthy recipients (dāna), steadfast strength against wrongdoing (being durjaya to enemies), devotion expressed as intimate friendship with Viṣṇu (sakhya-bhāva), and universal non-malice toward all beings (adroha).
Mārkaṇḍeya articulates a set of aspirational vows/boons—what he wishes to embody—linking social duty (supporting the learned), righteous power (resisting enemies), devotional relationship with Viṣṇu, and compassionate conduct toward all creatures.
