Mārkaṇḍeya said: Then the sons of King Kuvalāśva surrounded him on every side and rushed to strike. With sharp arrows, maces, clubs, battle-axes, iron bars, spears, and bright, keen-edged swords they assailed him. Wounded by these many weapons, the mighty Dhundhu flared up in wrath; yet, in his fury, he swallowed up the various missiles and weapons they hurled—showing that mere force, when driven by anger and pride, can be rendered futile against a foe sustained by unnatural power, and that disciplined courage must be joined with right means and guidance.

Educational Q&A

Courage and martial effort are necessary, but anger-driven violence and mere weaponry may fail against extraordinary evil; effective action requires disciplined resolve, proper means, and wise guidance rather than uncontrolled wrath.

Kuvalāśva’s sons encircle and attack the asura Dhundhu with many kinds of weapons—arrows, maces, clubs, axes, iron bars, spears, and swords. Dhundhu becomes enraged and astonishingly consumes the weapons and missiles thrown at him.
