Mārkaṇḍeya said: “At the end of the age, want and deprivation will befall all living beings. All the quarters will blaze as if on fire, and the stars will lose their radiance.”
The verse underscores impermanence: even the cosmic order shows signs of collapse at yugānta. Ethically, it urges sobriety and detachment—do not base one’s conduct or relationships solely on prosperity, since scarcity and upheaval can overtake all beings.
Mārkaṇḍeya is describing yugānta-lakṣaṇas (portents of the end of an age): universal deprivation, the quarters appearing to burn, and the dimming of the stars—imagery that frames a broader discourse on decline and the fragility of worldly supports.
