Mārkaṇḍeya said: “Before long, the earth will be crowded with mlecchas (foreign or non-Vedic peoples). Fearing the crushing burden of taxes, the brāhmaṇas will abandon their homes and seek refuge in all ten directions.” The verse frames social disorder as an ethical warning: when governance becomes oppressive, the learned and dharma-bearing classes are driven into displacement, and the moral fabric of society frays.
मार्कण्डेय उवाच
The verse warns that when rulers impose oppressive taxation and fail to protect dharma, society destabilizes: the learned and dharma-oriented people are forced into flight, and the land becomes dominated by groups seen as outside the prevailing moral-ritual order.
Mārkaṇḍeya is describing future degeneration (a prophetic, Kali-age style forecast): the earth will soon be overrun by mlecchas, and brāhmaṇas, frightened by heavy taxes, will scatter in all directions seeking safety.
