Mārkaṇḍeya said: “All of you are endowed with extraordinary valor and steadfastness. A divine radiance fills you; you are possessed of strong, well-knit bodies. For the sake of accomplishing the gods’ purpose, you have come down to this earth from yonder world; therefore you have mastered every noble branch of learning.”

Educational Q&A

The verse frames the Pāṇḍavas’ excellence—valor, endurance, and learning—as purposeful endowments aligned with a divine mandate. Ethical strength (sattva) and disciplined knowledge (vidyā) are presented not as mere personal achievements but as responsibilities to serve dharma and fulfill a higher cosmic task.

Sage Mārkaṇḍeya addresses King Yudhiṣṭhira (and by extension his brothers), praising their extraordinary qualities and asserting that they have descended to earth to accomplish the gods’ work. This reassurance strengthens Yudhiṣṭhira’s resolve during the hardships of exile by interpreting their suffering and struggle within a larger divine purpose.
