Mārkaṇḍeya said: “Those sinners, given to evil conduct, became short-lived in accordance with their deeds. The dreadful fruits of their wicked actions began to manifest. For the sake of every desired object, they started seeking support from others, begging with outstretched hands. Many turned into unbelievers, and many became unsettled and divided in mind.”

Evil actions shorten life and bring harsh consequences; when adharma ripens, people lose inner steadiness, become dependent and desperate, and may even fall into disbelief—showing the moral and psychological collapse that follows sustained wrongdoing.
Mārkaṇḍeya describes a deteriorating condition among people: sinners become short-lived, the frightening results of their deeds appear, they begin begging and relying on others for their desires, and many become nāstika (unbelieving) and mentally unsettled.
