Having performed intense and arduous austerities, he pleased the Grandsire Brahmā and requested this very city as his dwelling. He also sought a boon that, in battle, he and his people would be free from fear even of the gods—revealing an ambition for secure sovereignty backed by ascetic power and divine sanction.
