Vaiśampāyana uvāca: krośamātra-prayāteṣu pāṇḍaveṣu mahātmasu | pādayām anucitā gantuṁ draupadī samupāviśat ||

Vaiśampāyana said: When the noble Pāṇḍavas had gone only about a krośa, Draupadī—unfit to proceed on foot—sat down. Delicate by nature and afflicted by the harsh wind and rain, she sank into distress and began to lose consciousness. The scene underscores the ethical burden of exile: even the righteous must endure suffering, and compassion and care for the vulnerable become an immediate duty.

Educational Q&A

Righteous life (dharma) is tested not only by grand vows but by immediate compassion: when hardship strikes, caring for the vulnerable—here Draupadī—becomes a primary duty, and endurance must be joined with empathy.

After the Pāṇḍavas have walked only a short distance in the forest, Draupadī—too delicate to continue on foot—sits down, overwhelmed by harsh weather and distress, and begins to faint.
