Bandin said: “O King Janaka, I am the son of King Varuṇa. In my father’s realm there was indeed a twelve-year sacrificial session (satra), matching the duration of your own. For the sake of that rite, I dispatched select foremost Brahmins to Varuṇa’s world—under the pretext of submerging them in water.”

Educational Q&A

The verse foregrounds the ethical tension between ritual ambition and moral conduct: even when framed as serving a grand sacrifice, forcibly sending Brahmins away ‘by a pretext’ raises questions about dharma, consent, and the limits of ritual justification.

Bandin identifies himself as Varuṇa’s son and explains why many Brahmins disappeared from Janaka’s court: he had sent chosen Brahmins to Varuṇa’s realm to serve a parallel twelve-year satra being conducted there, using the excuse of drowning/submerging them.
