Ṛśyaśṛṅga’s Luring, Rainfall at Aṅga, and Reconciliation with Vibhāṇḍaka (ऋश्यशृङ्गोपाख्यानम्)

na tāni seveta munir yatātmā satāṁ lokān prārthayānaḥ kathaṁcit | kṛtvā vighnaṁ tāpasānāṁ ramante pāpācārās tāpasās tān na paśyet ||

Vibhāṇḍaka said: A sage who has mastered his mind and seeks the meritorious worlds attained by the righteous should never, in any way, associate with those beings. Sinful night-roamers delight in creating obstacles to the austerities of ascetics; therefore an ascetic should not even raise his eyes to look at them.

Educational Q&A

A self-controlled ascetic seeking higher spiritual merit should avoid any association with deceptive, harmful influences that sabotage austerity; even giving them attention can become a doorway to distraction and downfall.

Vibhāṇḍaka instructs about the dangers posed by malevolent night-roamers who take pleasure in disrupting sages’ austerities, urging strict avoidance and non-engagement as a protective discipline.
