स्वर्गे दुर्योधनदर्शनम् | Duryodhana Seen in Heaven

Triviṣṭapa

asti devā na me kāmaḥ suyodhanam udīkṣitum | tatrāhaṁ gantum icchāmi yatra te bhrātaro mama ||

Vaiśaṃpāyana said: “O gods, I have no desire even to look upon Suyodhana (Duryodhana). I wish to go there—where my brothers are.” In this moment the speaker’s moral compass is clear: companionship with the righteous and beloved outweighs any allure of a heaven that includes the company of one he deems blameworthy.

Educational Q&A

Ethically, the verse highlights that true fulfillment is not merely a reward-state (svarga) but alignment with one’s moral convictions and chosen company: the speaker rejects even the sight of the wrongdoer and seeks the presence of the righteous brothers.

In Svargārohaṇa, the protagonist is shown a heavenly realm where Duryodhana is present; he protests to the gods, declaring he does not wish to see Suyodhana and instead wants to go wherever his brothers are, even if that place is not heaven.
