Vaiśampāyana said: Having reached the river Gaṅgā—auspicious, fit for sacred rites with its holy waters—serene and clear, broad in form and bordered by great forests, they arrived there to perform the water-offerings and funerary observances for their slain kin. The scene frames grief within dharma: even amid the devastation of war, the living must honor the dead through prescribed rites and remembrance.
