The Fall of Duryodhana and the Contest of Restraint
तस्मिंस्तदा सम्प्रहारे दारुणे संकुले भृशम् । उभावपि परिश्रान्तौ युध्यमानावरिंदमौ,उस समय उस अत्यन्त भयंकर घमासान युद्धमें शत्रुओंका दमन करनेवाले वे दोनों वीर परस्पर युद्ध करते हुए बहुत थक गये
tasmiṁs tadā samprahāre dāruṇe saṅkule bhṛśam | ubhāv api pariśrāntau yudhyamānāv arindamau ||
In that moment, amid the fierce and tightly entangled clash of arms, both heroes—each a subduer of foes—continued fighting one another, yet were greatly worn down by exhaustion. The verse underscores the grinding human cost of battle: even the mightiest, driven by duty and rivalry, are brought to fatigue within the chaos of war.
वायुदेव उवाच
Even renowned warriors are subject to fatigue and limitation; the verse highlights the relentless, dehumanizing pressure of war and invites reflection on the ethical weight of prolonged violence despite heroic ideals.
During an extremely fierce and chaotic close-quarters battle, two opposing heroes continue to fight each other, but both become greatly exhausted while still engaged in combat.
