Educational Q&A

The verse frames war as ghora (dreadful) and emphasizes mindful listening to truthful testimony. It highlights the moral weight of mass destruction and the responsibility of a ruler to face the consequences of conflict through honest report.

Dhritarashtra has asked about the state of the armies during the Karna-Arjuna clash. Sanjaya begins his account, urging the king to listen attentively as he describes the immense slaughter of men and of war-animals on the battlefield.
