Arjuna’s targeted advance; Śalya–Karṇa dialogue; interception attempts
निवत्तैश्न पुनः पार्थर्भग्नं शत्रुबलं महत् । कौरवान् द्रवतो होष कर्णो रोधयते<र्जुन,“अर्जुन! वह देखो, लौटे हुए पाण्डव योद्धाओंने शत्रुओंकी विशाल वाहिनीके पाँव उखाड़ दिये। भागते हुए कौरववीरोंको यह कर्ण रोक रहा है
sañjaya uvāca | nivṛttaiḥ punaḥ pārthaiḥ bhagnaṃ śatrubalaṃ mahat | kauravān dravato hoṣa karṇo rodhayate 'rjuna ||
Sanjaya said: “O Arjuna, behold! The Pandava warriors, having turned back again, have shattered the enemy’s vast host and broken its momentum. And see—Karna is now checking the Kaurava fighters as they flee.”
संजय उवाच
The verse highlights battlefield dharma in practice: even amid collapse and fear, leaders are expected to steady their side and prevent panic. It also shows how resolve and a timely return can reverse a rout, underscoring responsibility and courage under pressure.
Sanjaya reports to Arjuna that the Pandava warriors have turned back and smashed the enemy’s large formation. As the Kauravas begin to flee, Karna is depicted as trying to stop and rally them, checking their flight.
